Starkey Hearing Foundation - Mission to Sri Lanka

15th to 18th November 2014
Synergen Health - Starkey Hearing Foundation

SYNERGEN Health, in collaboration with the Starkey Hearing Foundation and Sri Lanka Army took up the challenge of coordinating a program of distributing hearing aids to Sri Lankans with severe hearing loss who couldn’t afford them.

With the blessings of the Ministry of Defense and Urban Development and the support of the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, this noble and meritorious program kicked off in June 2014 with the selection and screening of over 2,000 hearing impaired patients from Jaffna, Vavuniya, Minneriya and Colombo, of which 85% were civilians from the North and East that had been impacted by the civil war, while the rest were Military personnel and their family members.

Between the 15th and 18th of November 2014, 1,766 beneficiaries were transported to Colombo by the Army from each of the above locations and were fitted with customized hearing aids under the watchful guidance of Starkey Founder Bill and his wife Tani Austin, their team of sponsors, volunteers and Audiologists. They were accompanied by a medical team dispatched by the Directorate of Army Medical Services, along with over 60 volunteers from SYNERGEN Health, and Vision Care, who would be providing ongoing aftercare services during Phase 3 of this project.

This benevolent event was also graced by many distinguished guests and celebrities such as the Former Sri Lankan Ambassador to the US and Mexico, His Excellency Mr. Jaliya Wickramasuriya, NFL star and Super Bowl Champion, Sidney Rice and star of the popular primetime soap opera ‘Melrose Place’ and the television series ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’, Josie Bissett.
